What causes a renewal to fail

Four pitfalls that
can cost you your status.

The B permit is renewed every year for the first 5 years. A single missing document and the machine jams: in the best case, several months of administrative blockage; in the worst, loss of the right to stay. Here is what tips files over the edge.

01

Missing the legal deadline

Filing after expiry = treated as a new arrival. You lose the benefit of your seniority and may be required to leave the territory while waiting.

02

Income deemed unstable

Variable salary, temp assignment, poorly documented switch to self-employment, a fixed-term contract less than 3 months from expiry. The authority looks for stability — it's up to you to demonstrate it.

03

Non-compliant housing

Undeclared sublet, overcrowded shared housing, family in accommodation deemed too small under the rooms-per-person rule. Each canton applies its own standard.

04

Debts or certificates of unrecoverable debt

Even when settled, they remain on the register for 20 years. A CHF 800 debt to a telecom provider can be enough to weaken the renewal. We prepare the supporting evidence.

Our support

6 steps
for a clean file.

  1. 01

Automatic reminder 90 days before expiry

You no longer have to remember the expiry date. We contact you before each renewal to start putting the file together.

  2. 02

    Audit of supporting documents

We check your payslips for the last 12 months, your lease, your residence certificate, your debt enforcement office extract and your tax certificate.

  3. 03

    Complete cantonal file

We prepare the canton's official form (OCPM in Geneva, SPOP in Vaud, Migrationsamt in German-speaking Switzerland…) with all annexes correctly dated.

  4. 04

    Filing within the legal window

Filing is ideally done between 60 and 30 days before expiry — neither too early nor too late.

  5. 05

    Handling follow-up requests

If the cantonal authority asks for additional information (missing document, clarification on income, language certificate), we respond on your behalf within the deadlines.

  6. 06

Appeal included in case of refusal

If your application is refused, we draft the appeal brief within the 30-day legal deadline and file it with the competent authority — included in the subscription.

What the authority checks

The 5 points
scrutinised in detail.

Stable income

Payslips for the last 3 to 12 months, current employment contract. For self-employed: profit-and-loss statements + AVS certificate.

No social assistance

If you have received social assistance, your renewal may be at risk. We assess your situation and build an argument.

Integration

Respect for public order, willingness to integrate, knowledge of French (or the cantonal language) generally expected from level A1 after 2-3 years.

Adequate housing

Sufficient living space for the number of occupants (cantonal rules vary: typically 1 room more than the number of occupants).

No serious debt enforcement

Unrecovered debts or certificates of unrecoverable debt can block the renewal. We prepare supporting evidence or repayment plans where necessary.

Special cases

Has your situation changed?
We integrate it into the file.

Change of employer

New contract to attach · notification to the cantonal service · sometimes a new decision required for third-country nationals.

Marriage or divorce

Change of civil status that affects the basis of stay. After a divorce, keeping the B permit depends on the duration of the marriage (3 years) and integration.

Birth of a child

A child born in Switzerland to a B permit holder also obtains a B permit. We file the application within 90 days after the birth.

Switch to self-employment

For EU/EFTA nationals, this is a right. For third-country nationals, it requires a specific authorisation with economic justification.

Interruption of stay abroad

Beyond 6 consecutive months outside Switzerland, the B permit can lapse. Prior authorisation must be requested to preserve the status.

My employer told me in July: 'You need to renew your permit, it expires in September.' I thought it was just a signature to get. A firm in the city centre wanted CHF 400 for the diagnosis, then CHF 300/hour. I contacted Helvetic Assist on a Saturday evening. Monday morning they answered me in Portuguese. The advisor spotted that my lease had been changed by the management company without my knowing, with an error on the surface area — which would have been enough to block the file. Permit renewed in 6 weeks. Since then, I get a message 3 months before each expiry and I no longer think about it. For CHF 45/month, I have peace of mind and someone who speaks my language if I have a problem.

B Permit FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the B permit.

How long does a B permit last?
One year, renewable. After 5 years of regular, uninterrupted residence, you can apply for a C permit (10 years for third-country nationals outside bilateral agreements).
When should I file my renewal application?
Between 60 and 30 days before expiry. Too early = refused as premature. Too late = treated as a new arrival, with risk of an interruption in residence status.
Can I work while my B permit is being renewed?
Yes, provided you filed your application before expiry. You receive a filing certificate that grants the right to stay and work until the decision.
What happens if I lose my job?
For EU/EFTA nationals: you keep the right to stay for 6 months while actively looking for work (+6 additional months under conditions). For third-country nationals: the permit is generally tied to employment, and any prolonged interruption weakens the status.
Language level required for B permit renewal?
No official minimum level for the renewal itself. But weak linguistic integration can complicate renewals after 5 years and block the move to a C permit.
Can I move to another canton with a B permit?
Yes, but you must notify both cantons (departure + arrival). The new canton can, in theory, refuse your settlement — this is rare but possible in cases of recent social assistance or debts. We manage the transition.
My B permit was refused. What recourse do I have?
You have 30 days from the notification to file a cantonal administrative appeal, then potentially an appeal to the Federal Administrative Court. Appeals are included in our package for files we have prepared.
How much does a B permit renewal cost?
Cantonal fees range from CHF 60 to CHF 162 depending on the canton. Additional ancillary costs (biometrics, mailing) may apply. Our support is included in your monthly subscription (from CHF 40.50/month), with no extra cost per renewal.
Can I apply for a C permit before 5 years?
Yes, in certain cases: early naturalisation due to exceptional integration, marriage to a Swiss citizen (5 years of marriage + 3 years of residence). We assess your eligibility during the diagnosis.

Your job, your home, your children —
it all rests on this permit.

A failed renewal does not stay an administrative matter: it's a contract that falls through, a lease at risk, schooling suspended. Don't do it on the fly. For CHF 45/month, our team handles it every year, without stress or unpleasant surprises.
